Assemble Maintenance Mania 2016

Maintenance Mania 2016 took place this week and it was another terrific event, and F&C represented well with our Thor-themed t-shirts!

The question was simple: who was worthy to wield the hammer of Thor and take on all comers at Maintenance Mania? Who was ready to assemble?

How it Works: Attendees compete in seven skill-based timed events and a racecar competition where the each participant makes a pinewood derby car out of maintenance materials. These table games are built around common maintenance activities. The following timed events are standard for all Maintenance Mania programs:

AO Smith Water Heater Installation
CFG Faucet Repair
Fluidmaster Toilet Repair
Frigidaire Icemaker Installation
Kidde Fire & Carbon Monoxide Safety Installation
Kwikset Key Control Deadbolt Test
Motorola Race Car Competition
Seasons Ceiling Fan Assembly

The two top individuals from each region will be eligible to go to the National Apartment Association Annual Conference in San Francisco this summer.

Well, Flaherty & Collins Properties answered that call and had the strength of many Thors!

The F&C team was in full force to cheer on our Maintenance Team – and won the Spirit Award! Our own Gavin Greene brought his snare drum.

All the cheering led to a 1st place finish in the Ice Maker Installation competition! Congratulations Paul Palacios!

Westlake’s Bill Hess won Best Innovation for making his own HVAC parts! Congrats, Bill!

And we also have put our hands together and congratulate Renaldo Guerrero (Axis) for winning the Best Mustache in Maintenance Award and Fernando Herandez, Runner-Up of the Maintenance Above and Beyond Award.

And finally, special thanks to Derek Miller, Tammye Strickland and Julia Young (all pictured below) for their efforts with the F&C side of the event!

Another Indiana Apartment Association Maintenance Mania is in the books!

This year was the 8th annual Maintenance Mania event, where attendees compete in seven skill-based events and a race car competition where the participants make pinewood derby cars out of maintenance materials. These table games are built around common maintenance activities. Some of the time events are standard for MM programs: Water Heater Installation, Faucet Installation, Flush Toilet Conversion, Icemaker Installation and a Deadbolt Test. In addition, Maintenance Mania includes a series of seminars to promote different topics of interest in the field.

During the competition, Flaherty & Collins brought 41 of our maintenance staff to compete in the timed events – the largest (and loudest!) group at the event.

As always, racing the cars was one of the highlights of the day.

This year, we brought home two trophies. Paul Palacios, an accountant out of our corporate office, took home second place in the Frigidaire Icemaker Installation event. Thanks to our cheerleaders, we also brought home a spirit award!

Maintenance Mania Fun

Last night, a group of the Flaherty & Collins maintenance team members attended the official kickoff to this year’s Indiana Apartment Association Maintenance Mania challenges, hosted by Sullivan Commercial Supply. Each year, maintenance team members from around the state come together to compete in timed events built around different tasks that maintenance encounters on the job each day. The Maintenance Mania National Championship will determine who is the fastest maintenance technician in the country. Two individuals from each region will get to attend the NAA Conference in Dever to compete for the title in June.

The kickoff event is a great time for maintenance team members to come together to practice each event and work on improving their times. There’s lots of excitement in the air as the timed events get started and everyone tries their hand at getting the fastest time. This year, we had one big winner from Flaherty & Collins…

Paul Palacios! Paul took home the best time in four of the seven events. He won the Kwikset Key Control Deadbolt Test, Seasons Ceiling Fan Installation, CFG Faucet Installation, and the Fluidmaster Duo Flush Toilet Conversion. Great job, Paul!
