The Snow Must Go On…

DSC_1898Perhaps you are of the opinion that this has been a particularly harsh winter. Perhaps you are ready for spring, with all it’s warmth, green grass and temperatures slightly in an acceptable range for being outside longer than 3.4 seconds without your fingers feeling like frozen popsicles?

Well, so are we.

While the snow and ice can appear beautiful from inside the comfort of your cozy dwelling, it can be quite treacherous to travel in and difficult to keep cleared.

Flaherty & Collins employees have spent over 3,000 hours on snow-related removal since November 1, covering 92 apartment communities and 13,053 units. That’s a 70 percent increase from last winter. Our hard working staff has also dealt with 48 broken pipes and issued 25 Weather Advisory Notifications.

Just inside the greater Indianapolis Metro area, which includes 41 Flaherty & Collins Properties apartment communities, our diligent crew has spent 1,987.5 hours on snow related removal and maintenance. That’s an increase of 75 percent since last year.

Tami Chin

At Ninety7Fifty on the Park in Orland, Illinois, 20 more inches of snow than the anticipated 38-inch average. In South Bend, 126 inches of snow has been recorded since November of last year – 42 inches of snow per month. And at The Residence at The COR in Ramsey, Minnesota, temperatures of -37 degrees have been recorded.

None us need those stats to know what a harsh winter it has been, but they give clarity to just what Mother Nature has dealt us this season. And we cannot thank our crew enough for their energy and efforts to make our communities safe and clean. We want those who call Flaherty & Collins Properties apartment communities home to remain as active as possible – no matter the forecast.

Big Game, Big Fun

NFL-Super-Bowl-2014-5

It’s that time of year again – time to plan your Super Bowl parties! If you’re just now starting to plan for Sunday, never fear. We’ve got you covered with some of our favorite recipes and games to go with the big event.

Everyone knows that one of the best perks of the Super Bowl is the great food; even those not watching the game can appreciate the snacks that they get to enjoy. Here are a few of our favorite recipes for this weekend:

  • Crispy Loaded Buffalo Oven Fries: Fries, wing sauce, and lots of cheese? Don’t mind if we do!
  • Pizza Dip: Ordering pizza on game day is a wait that you won’t want to sit through. Calm your pizza craving by make this dip instead.
  • Crispy Baked Ravioli: Pasta is messy. Keep the apartment a little cleaner with these ravioli bites.
  • Individual Seven Layer Dips: 7 layers of goodness in one cup; the perfect snack to enjoy without having to sit at the table while everyone else is watching the game.
  • Sweet BBQ Wings: You can’t do game day without the wings! These are a little sweet and a little spicy, the perfect combination.
  • And you can’t forget the dessert! If you’re looking for something sweet, try out one of these recipes.

Another fun part of the big game are the games you can play at home. Here are some of our favorites:

  • Do you watch the game, or are you really there for the food and commercials? If you’re a fan of all the new ads, you need to check out these games, which include Super Bowl Bingo, a score card for the best ads, and the chip on your nose game.
  • If you’re a commercial pro, give this ad trivia a try.
  • Bingo is not for the faint of heart on game day. This printable Bingo square covers all the categories – including player with a ponytail.
  • If you’re a fan of trivia and think you know a lot about Super Bowl history, then you’ll want to print this game.
  • For the legal adults only, here are drinking games for both the Puppy Bowl and the Super Bowl. Print off these guides to know when to drink. (And watch out, those keywords like 12th man are sure to be a knockout in this game!)

Now you’re ready to enjoy the party!

Mayor’s Diversity Awards Lunch

diversity lunchLast week, Flaherty & Collins was honored as a finalist for the Workforce Diversity Award, one of the six prestigious awards handed out at the 13th Annual Mayor’s Celebration of Diversity Awards.

At the luncheon on Tuesday, Flaherty & Collins was a silver sponsor of the program and was honored to be nominated by Mayor Ballard and his team. Flaherty & Collins was proud to be included in a room of so many distinguished Indianapolis-based companies and corporations.

Flaherty & Collins was nominated for a series of trainings that took place last fall to all interested individuals of construction related fields. Flaherty & Collins sponsored and paid for the series of classes, which covered five modules and discussed tips for securing jobs and finding work with subcontractors within the construction field. These modules included HVAC, dry walling, painting, masonry and flooring.

In all, a total of 93 individuals attended these classes, which brought in experts from the Indianapolis-area to teach the courses and provide career advice to attendees. Flaherty & Collins plans to continue the program in 2014 as well.

“We were honored just to be nominated for such a prestigious award,” said Jerry Collins, President of Flaherty & Collins. “Yet we never set out to win awards; we do our best work when keeping our ultimate goals in mind, and this program is a prime example of how we continue to play an active role in education and diversity in the Indianapolis-area.”
